“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world”(Matthew 28: 19-20).

The ordained Ministry of the Church of God International is based on “Servant Eldership.” Jesus Christ said, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve” (Luke 22:25-26). Also He said, “Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28).

The function of ministry is to serve and nurture those God has called out. They are helpers of their joy as Paul mentions (2 Cor. 1:24). With this in mind, it becomes clear the ordained ministry is a privileged role in caring for the Church and requires a sincere desire to help those Christians in their relationship with Jesus Christ and the Father. Notice what the writer in Hebrews says; “Obey them that have the rule (guide) over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you” (Hebrews 13:17).

The Church of God International’s ministry is trained to consider and understand that God is working with each individual differently and that each Christian is responsible to work out his or her own salvation with trembling and fear (Philippians 2:12). However, the ministry is charged to speak the word of God boldly and to instruct, and exhort, in and out of season (2 timothy 4:1-5), but always realizing that it is God who gives the increase, and it is God who has the ownership of each individual Christian, not the minister. Notice, “Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom you believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase” (1 Cor. 3:5-6).

When working together, the ministry respects the principle of “first among equals.” This principle is apparent throughout the ministry of Jesus Christ by how He dealt with His twelve apostles. It is through this principle that we begin to understand what Paul explains concerning the organization of the Church body. “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come into the unity of the faith, and the knowledge of the Son of God, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-13). First among equals simply means each minister is gifted differently for the overall benefit of the Christian Movement. The Church of God International respects these difference and attempts to encourage maximizing these gifts throughout the ministry for the benefit of the “Church-at-large” around the world.
