Trinity
By Dale Dupont

Through the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthian church, God teaches us that the Holy Spirit gives us the ability and power to know and understand spiritual things. In 1 Corinthians 2:7-12 Paul writes, “we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

But as it is written:

‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.’

But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God” (NKJV).

We can with this God given ability to understand, read the Bible and begin to know and understand God. We can check God’s Word, the Bible, to see if the Trinity doctrine is correct or not correct.

When considering the Trinity doctrine one must ask the simple question of how does the doctrine come up with God being three persons. The Trinity doctrine says that there is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. That adds up to three, so God is a Trinity.

Clearly the Bible says the Father is God. Then the Father says Jesus is God in Hebrew 1:8. Jesus is God, who was the Word who created all things. But that leaves us with this question: Is the Holy Spirit a being like the Father is a being or like Jesus is a being? God says that He created man in His own image in Genesis 1. So if we look at mankind we can get an insight into God. The Bible says we humans have a mind, heart, body, head, hair, hands, fingers, feet, eyes, back, etc. We also have a human spirit that gives us the ability to think and understand things that the rest of creation cannot. Remember, 1 Corinthians 2:11 says, “For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him.”

The Bible also says God has a mind, heart, body, head, hair, hands, fingers, feet, eyes, back, and a spirit. Revelation 2:11-16 describes what Jesus looks like now. “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last’.… Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me.… One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; He had in His right hand seven stars...” As a Bible study you may want to look up all the verses that describe God.

You have hands; so does God. You have eyes; so does God. You have a spirit; so does God. Now is your spirit a separate person from you? No, it’s a part of you. You are a being with many parts, so God is a being with many parts. There are more than three parts to you, so also there are more than three parts to God the Father or Jesus Christ His Son, who also is God. The Holy Spirit of God is one part of God, not a separate being, just like the voice of God or the hand of God are parts of God, not separate beings.

The simple Biblical truth is God is a family, a family of all-powerful, loving spirit beings. God is also the family name because the Father gives His name to the family. Paul wrote about the Father, “Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,” in Ephesians 3:15. It’s just like Israel, who gave his name to all his family. All Israel’s family is known by the name Israel. So all of God’s family is known as God. Like Israel’s family is made up of human beings, so God’s family is spirit beings. God is not three in one. Part of the good news is that you can be part of the family of God. When that happens, the family of God will be like the family of Israel in number, more than the sand of the seas. i
