After 12 years of living in the same house, Max had to move with his family from Georgia to California. He wasn't happy about having to leave his friends behind, but his mom kept telling him things wouldn't be so bad.

The first day of sixth grade arrived. Max ate his breakfast, even though his nerves were making him feel anything but hungry. He grabbed his backpack and headed for the bus stop. When he reached the bus stop, he was surprised to see. . .

. . . a small puppy that had a broken leg.
-Brittni, age 15

He looked at the injured animal. "Maybe 6th grade isn't going to be so bad," he thought as he scooped up the injured animal. He decided to run it inside to his mom to get her to nurse it while he was gone at school. Max put the pup in his mom's pick up. He ran to catch the bus and barely made it in time. He sat right next to a small boy. Then the boy said . . .
-Brittany, age 12
"Hi my name is John what is yours?"
"My name is Max," Max said calmly.
John asked,"What grade are you in?"
"6th grade," Max replied.
"Everyone in the 6th grade has only one main teacher. The only time you leave that class is for MAPS," John said.
"MAPS?" Max said puzzled.
"Yes, 'MAPS', Music, Art, and PE,"John said continuing "all the 6th grade MAP teachers are nice. Its the other grades you'll have to worry about next year."
As soon as Max got to school he went to his homeroom and put up his things. A very tall man, sat behind a desk. Max thought,"Will this man be...."
-David Baldwin, age 15

...my teacher for most of my classes? He looks very strict. I wonder if he'll like me. Well, I'd better...
-Alissa, age 12

be very good or I will get in trouble. But I could test him, but I better not!
-Sarah, age 10
Still, Max kept the thought of "testing" his new teacher in the back of his mind. You see, Max was known in Georgia for his outgoingness. This was always what Max considered to be a plus for meeting new people, but...
-Allie, age 15

Just then Max's thoughts were interrupted by a couple new students who said...

"Hi! I see we have a new student this year!"
The teacher said, "My name is Mr. Fisherroot! Everybody will have a turn to tell about themselves!"
He pointed to a tall boy is the front row! He said, "Let's start with you!"
The boy stood up and said......
-Sarah, age 10

..."Why do we always do this in the beginning of the school year?"
And Mr. Fisherroot said, "Because ...
-Kirsten, age 14

I said so." Mr. Fisherroot pointed to another boy and asked him to stand and say his name. The boy stood up and said...

"Yo yo yo. I'm Cameron. I'm from New York. My friends there called me Cam. Look, stay outta my way and we cool."
It went on like that for about 30 minutes. Books got passed out and things like that. Max was happy when the first day of school was over. He wanted to go see how the puppy was. When got home...
-Brittni, age 15

...he saw the puppy laying down like it was sick. He asked his mom what was wrong with the puppy. His mom, whose name is Beth, said that the puppy did have a broken leg like they knew before but she could not find why the puppy was acting like it was sick! They went to bed! In the morning, Max found a big surpise! The puppy wasn't a puppy! It was a mother! It had puppies over night!
-Sarah, age 11

She had 4 puppies! Max decided to name the mother Wonder. They named all the puppies! The names were Spot, Tiger, Patch, and Trouble! They named Trouble that name because he is a trouble maker. He was the youngest!
-Rebecca, age 8
